Historic 1930s tram from Sintra to Atlantic coast

The Sintra Tram is a nostalgic 1930‑era Brill electric line that carries passengers from the historic centre of Sintra to the seaside resort of Praia das Maçãs. The single‑track route runs about 11‑13 km, winding through the Sintra Mountains before opening onto Atlantic views, and the whole journey lasts roughly 40‑45 minutes. Trams depart from a stop just outside the Museum of Modern Art (MU.SA) in Vila Alda.

In summer the first tram leaves at 9:20 am, with subsequent departures at roughly 50‑minute intervals; winter service drops to a single daily run. Because each car seats only 45 people, the tram can fill quickly on sunny days, and passengers may need to wait for the next vehicle or use the parallel Scotturb bus #441. Tickets are bought from the driver on board—€3 for adults and €2 for children or seniors.

The line dates back to a 1898 concession and opened its first section in March 1904, extending to the beach in July 1905 and reaching Azenhas do Mar by 1930. Today it remains a living piece of Portuguese transport heritage, offering a relaxed, scenic ride that lets visitors experience the same coastal panoramas that have attracted travelers for more than a century.
