Moorish Castle
10th-century hilltop fortress with panoramic views
The Moorish Castle (Castelo dos Mouros) in Sintra is a dramatic hilltop fortress that offers visitors a journey through centuries of history and some of the best panoramic views in the region. Founded in the 10th century during the Moorish occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, the castle’s serpentine granite walls snake along the ridge, blending seamlessly with massive boulders and the surrounding forest. Its strategic position once guarded the approaches to Sintra and Lisbon, and today it provides sweeping vistas over Sintra town, the colorful Pena Palace, and, on clear days, the Atlantic Ocean.
Within the castle grounds, you’ll find the remains of the Church of São Pedro de Canaferrim, a medieval Christian necropolis, ancient cisterns, and towers such as the keep and the royal tower. The parapet walk is a highlight, allowing visitors to traverse the ramparts and take in the landscape from multiple vantage points.
The castle is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with last admission at 5:30 p.m. Tickets cost €12 for adults, €10 for youths and seniors, and €33 for a family ticket, with a 15% discount available for online purchases. The site is accessible by bus #434 from Sintra station, making it an easy addition to a day of exploring Sintra’s UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Moorish Castle’s blend of rugged architecture and natural beauty makes it a must-see for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
