Pena Palace
Colorful Romanticist palace atop Sintra hills
Pena Palace, perched atop a forested hill in Sintra, is one of Portugal’s most iconic and colorful landmarks. This 19th-century Romanticist palace is renowned for its vivid red, yellow, and blue façades, whimsical towers, and ornate battlements, all set against the lush greenery of Pena Park. The palace’s eclectic architecture blends Neo-Gothic, Neo-Manueline, and Moorish influences, creating a fairy-tale silhouette that is visible from miles around.
Visitors can explore the palace’s lavish interiors, restored to reflect the royal residence as it appeared in 1910, just before the Portuguese monarchy’s exile. Highlights include grand reception rooms, intricately tiled corridors, and panoramic terraces offering sweeping views of Sintra and the Atlantic coast. The surrounding park, open from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., is a botanical wonderland of winding paths, exotic plantings, and hidden viewpoints.
Pena Palace is open daily, with the palace itself accessible from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. (last ticket at 5:30 p.m., last entry at 6:00 p.m.). Admission is €20 for adults, €18 for youths (6–17) and seniors (65+), and €35 for a family ticket (two adults and two youths). Tickets can be purchased on site at vending machines, though the ticket office closes from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. A visit to Pena Palace is a journey into Portugal’s royal past and a highlight of any trip to Sintra.
