Nossa Senhora Da Peninha Viewpoint

Highest Sintra viewpoint with panoramic coastal views

5.7/10
#10 of 18 in Sintra

Nossa Senhora da Peninha sits on a craggy outcrop in the Serra de Sintra National Park, at 529 m it is the highest viewpoint on the Sintra Mountains. The site is tucked inside the heart of Pena Park, about 4 km from Sintra’s historic centre. Because the hill is only reachable by car (or electric bike/car), most visitors drive up; a walk from the town would take roughly four hours.

When you arrive, the terraces open onto sweeping panoramas of the Atlantic coastline. On clear days you can spot the Berlengas Islands to the north and Cape Espichel to the south. The baroque chapel that crowns the hill is closed to interior visits, but its azulejo‑clad façade and the surrounding ruins—including the ancient hermitage of São Saturnino—are visible from the outside. Nearby stands the unfinished Palace of Peninha, built in 1918 by Carvalho Monteiro (the mind behind Quinta da Regaleira); it remains closed to the public.

There is no admission fee, and a typical visit lasts from fifteen minutes to an hour, spent strolling the terraces and taking photos. The site is exposed to strong winds and occasional fog, so dress for the weather and aim to explore in daylight. The sanctuary’s roots trace back to early Portuguese Christianity, giving the viewpoint a quiet historical resonance alongside its natural beauty.
