NewsMuseum

Europe’s largest media and communication museum

8.0/10
#10 of 18 in Sintra

NewsMuseum sits in the historic centre of Sintra, occupying the former Toy Museum at Rua Visconde de Monserrate 26. As Europe’s largest media‑and‑communication museum, it invites visitors to trace recent history through radio‑ and TV‑based displays that examine war reporting, iconic conflicts and the “bad news” that shapes public perception. Interactive stations let you handle vintage microphones, edit short news clips and explore a 16‑hour archive of video and audio material presented in both English and Portuguese. A modest auditorium hosts occasional talks and school‑group sessions, adding a classroom‑like dimension to the experience.

The museum opens daily from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, and tickets are sold at the desk or booked by email. A standard adult entry costs €6.50, rising to €9.50 if you add a guided tour of the adjacent Myths & Legends exhibition. Reduced rates apply to seniors, students, journalists and youth card holders (€3.50 / €6.50 with or without the tour). Children under five enter free; those aged 6‑15 pay €3.50 (or €5.50 with the tour). Families can opt for a combined ticket (€17 for two adults and two children, €25 with the tour), while Lisbon Card holders enjoy free entry after reservation. The museum’s location, close to Sintra’s other cultural sites, makes it an easy stop for anyone interested in how media shapes contemporary Portuguese and global narratives.
