National Palace Of Sintra (Palácio Nacional De Sintra)
Medieval palace with iconic twin chimneys
The National Palace of Sintra sits in the town’s historic centre, directly opposite the medieval castle. It opens every day from 09:30 am to 06:30 pm, with the last ticket sold at 06:00 pm. The ticket office closes for one hour at midday (12:00 pm–1:00 pm); if you arrive during that window you can use the automatic vending machines on site. Admission costs €13 for adults (18‑64), €10 for youths (6‑17) and seniors (65+), and a family ticket (two adults + two youths) is €35. The surrounding gardens are free to enter and share the same opening hours.
Inside, the palace’s rooms display a mix of Gothic, Manueline and Moorish décor, reflecting its centuries‑long role as a royal residence. Visitors typically spend 45 minutes to an hour wandering the tiled atrium, the iconic twin‑chimney façade, and the richly painted halls. The garden offers a quiet spot to rest, with shaded benches and views of the town’s winding streets.
Because the palace is centrally located, it is easy to combine with a stroll through Sintra’s narrow lanes, a coffee at a nearby café, or a visit to the adjacent castle. Remember to book tickets online at least three days ahead to secure the 15 % discount and the option to reschedule your visit if needed.
