Cruz Alta Viewpoint (Parque Da Pena)
Highest peak in Sintra Mountains with panoramic views
Cruz Alta Viewpoint sits at 529 metres above sea level, making it the highest spot on the Sintra Mountains. The platform rests in the heart of Parque da Pena, about four kilometres from Sintra’s historic centre, and offers a sweeping panorama that stretches across the forested hills, the town below and, on clear days, the Atlantic coast.
Reaching the viewpoint involves a short walk along the park’s marked trails; the path winds through the same landscaped woodland that surrounds the Pena Palace, allowing visitors to enjoy the park’s fern gardens and occasional streams before arriving at the summit. Once there, the open vista provides a natural frame for the iconic pink‑and‑yellow palace, the Moorish Castle and the surrounding countryside, giving a sense of the region’s layered history—from medieval fortifications to 19 century Romantic architecture.
Because Cruz Alta is part of the UNESCO‑listed Sintra cultural landscape, the experience feels both scenic and historically resonant. No ticket is required to access the viewpoint, though the broader park follows the standard opening hours for Sintra’s public green spaces. It makes an ideal stop for photographers, hikers, or anyone seeking a quiet spot to absorb the breadth of the Sintra horizon.
