Convento dos Capuchos, nestled deep within the Sintra hills, offers a striking contrast to the grandeur of Sintra’s palaces. Founded in the 16th century by Franciscan monks, the convent is renowned for its extreme simplicity and harmony with nature. Built directly into the granite boulders and enveloped by a preserved “primitive” woodland, the site reflects the monks’ commitment to poverty and contemplation. The forest surrounding the convent remains largely untouched, providing a tranquil, almost mystical atmosphere for visitors.
The complex includes a small chapel dedicated to the Passion of Christ, a cloister, refectory, kitchen, library, infirmaries, and several hermitages such as Ecce Homo and Crucifixion. The interiors are modest, with tiny doorways, cork-lined walls, and minimal decoration, emphasizing the Franciscan ideals of humility and respect for the environment.
Convento dos Capuchos is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with last admission at 5:00 p.m. The ticket office closes for lunch between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m., but tickets can be purchased from vending machines at other times. Visitors should check for possible closures during periods of fire risk. Exploring the convent is a meditative experience, inviting reflection on a way of life shaped by simplicity and a deep connection to the natural world—a unique chapter in Sintra’s rich cultural landscape.
