18th-century Baroque tower with panoramic Porto views

9.2/10
#16 of 27 in Porto

Torre dos Clérigos is one of Porto’s most recognizable landmarks, rising above the city’s historic center with its elegant Baroque silhouette. Designed by Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni and completed in 1763, the granite and marble bell tower was once the tallest structure in Portugal and served as a navigational beacon for ships arriving at the Ribeira waterfront. Today, it remains a symbol of Porto and a must-visit for anyone exploring the city.

The tower is part of the Clérigos Church complex, which also includes a museum dedicated to the Brotherhood of Clerics and Nasoni’s architectural legacy. Entry to the church is free, while access to the tower and museum requires a ticket—typically €6, with discounts available for holders of the Porto Card, Casa da Música card, or Serralves Museum card.

Visitors can climb the 240 narrow steps to the top of the 249-foot tower, where a 360-degree viewpoint offers sweeping vistas of Porto’s rooftops, the Douro River, and landmarks such as the gardens of Cordoaria. The climb is rewarded with some of the best panoramic views in the city, making it a favorite spot for photographers and sightseers alike. The site often hosts concerts and exhibitions, adding to its vibrant cultural atmosphere. Torre dos Clérigos is open daily, and extended evening hours are available during summer and special occasions.
