#3 of 27 in Porto

Livraria Lello, located at Rua das Carmelitas 144 in Porto, is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world and a must-visit for literature lovers and architecture enthusiasts alike. Founded in 1881—though its origins trace back to 1869 with Frenchman Ernesto Chardron—the bookstore was later acquired and renamed by the Lello family. The building’s striking Neo-Manueline façade, crafted from granite and designed by Francisco Xavier Esteves, hints at the wonders inside.

Stepping into Livraria Lello, visitors are greeted by a breathtaking interior: a sweeping, ornate staircase, stained glass skylight, and intricately carved woodwork create an atmosphere reminiscent of a grand library from another era. The shop’s design has inspired countless visitors and is rumored to have influenced J.K. Rowling during her time in Porto. The shelves are lined with Portuguese and international titles, and the store often hosts literary events and exhibitions.

Livraria Lello is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and tickets start at around $18. Admission includes a voucher that can be used toward book purchases. Due to its popularity, there may be queues, especially during peak hours, but the experience is well worth the wait. Whether you’re a book lover or simply appreciate stunning architecture, Livraria Lello offers a magical glimpse into Porto’s cultural heritage.
