Coimbra University
One of Europe’s oldest universities and UNESCO site
Coimbra University, founded in 1290, is one of Europe’s oldest and most prestigious universities, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Set atop a hill overlooking the city, the university’s campus is a blend of historic architecture and academic tradition, with many of its buildings occupying what was once a royal palace. The current campus dates to the mid-16th century, though extensive remodeling in the 18th century has left little of the original residence.
A highlight of any visit is the Joanina Library, considered one of the world’s most beautiful. Gifted by King João V, the library houses around 40,000 volumes and is famous for its gold-covered interiors and the colonies of bats that protect the books from insects. The Capela de São Miguel, with its ornate gold leaf, painted ceiling, and 18th-century pipe organ, is another must-see. The Sala dos Capelos, formerly the royal throne room, now hosts academic ceremonies and is lined with portraits of Portuguese monarchs.
The university’s clock tower, built in the early 1700s, is notable for its open top, designed for astronomical observations. Visitors can explore the campus daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with last entry to the library at 5:40 p.m. The botanical garden, academic museum, and scientific collections round out the experience, making Coimbra University a fascinating destination for history, architecture, and culture enthusiasts.
