Serra de São Mamede
Mountain park with castles, hiking, and diverse ecosystems
Serra de São Mamede Natural Park, established in 1989, covers over 560 square kilometers in the northern Alentejo, bordering Spain. The park’s centerpiece is the Serra de São Mamede mountain range, whose peaks rise abruptly from the surrounding plains, creating a landscape of striking contrasts. The highest point, Pico de São Mamede (1,025 meters), is the tallest in southern Portugal and offers sweeping views over the Alentejo and into Spain.
The region’s history is as rich as its natural beauty. Prehistoric dolmens and menhirs dot the hills, while Roman ruins such as the ancient city of Ammaia reveal the area’s importance in antiquity. Medieval castles crown the hilltop towns of Marvão and Castelo de Vide, both renowned for their narrow cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, and panoramic vistas. Marvão’s castle, perched on a granite ridge, is one of Portugal’s most spectacular fortresses, while Castelo de Vide is famous for its Jewish quarter and historic synagogue.
Serra de São Mamede is a paradise for outdoor activities. The park boasts a network of hiking and cycling trails that wind through oak and chestnut forests, past vineyards, olive groves, and wildflower meadows. Popular routes include the ascent to Pico de São Mamede, walks around Portagem’s 16th-century bridge, and trails to hidden waterfalls and natural springs. The park’s diverse habitats support a wealth of wildlife, including wild boar, deer, otters, and over 150 bird species such as griffon vultures and golden eagles.
Cultural experiences abound in the villages and towns scattered throughout the park. Visitors can explore local markets, sample Alentejo wines and olive oils, and enjoy traditional cuisine in rustic taverns. The region is known for its olive oil production, artisanal cheeses, and hearty dishes like migas and lamb stew. Annual festivals, such as Marvão’s Chestnut Festival and Castelo de Vide’s Easter celebrations, offer a glimpse into the area’s vibrant traditions.
Getting to Serra de São Mamede is easiest by car, with the park located about 200 kilometers east of Lisbon and accessible via Portalegre, the main gateway town. Public transport is limited, but regional buses connect Portalegre to other towns in the park. Accommodation options range from boutique hotels in historic castles to rural guesthouses and eco-lodges, many offering stunning mountain views and peaceful settings.
The best time to visit Serra de São Mamede is in spring (March to May) and early autumn (September to October), when the weather is mild, the landscapes are lush, and wildflowers are in bloom. Summers can be hot, especially at lower elevations, while winters are cooler and quieter, ideal for a tranquil retreat. Whether you’re drawn by the hiking, the history, or the natural beauty, Serra de São Mamede promises a memorable and multifaceted Alentejo adventure.
