Carvoeiro
Clifftop Algarve village with beaches, caves, and boardwalks
Carvoeiro’s history as a fishing village is still evident in its narrow streets, traditional boats, and friendly local community. Over the past few decades, the town has grown into one of the Algarve’s most popular beach resorts, attracting visitors with its stunning scenery and laid-back charm. The heart of Carvoeiro is its sheltered beach, Praia de Carvoeiro, a crescent of golden sand backed by steep cliffs and overlooked by a lively promenade filled with restaurants, bars, and shops. The beach is ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports, with calm waters and lifeguard supervision during the summer months.
One of Carvoeiro’s most iconic attractions is Algar Seco, a series of dramatic sea caves, grottoes, and natural pools carved into the cliffs just east of the town center. The Carvoeiro Boardwalk, a wooden walkway along the clifftops, offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic and access to the Algar Seco rock formations. Further along the coast, the world-famous Benagil Cave can be reached by boat, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard, revealing a hidden beach illuminated by a natural skylight.
Carvoeiro is also a gateway to some of the Algarve’s best hiking and cycling routes. The Trail of Headlands (Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos) is a spectacular coastal path that links Carvoeiro to Praia da Marinha, passing through limestone arches, secluded coves, and panoramic viewpoints. Families will enjoy the nearby Slide & Splash waterpark and Zoomarine marine park, while golfers can tee off at several championship courses in the area.
The town’s vibrant center comes alive in the evenings, with live music, open-air dining, and a friendly, cosmopolitan crowd. Local cuisine features fresh seafood, grilled sardines, and regional specialties such as cataplana and piri-piri chicken. Carvoeiro’s calendar is filled with summer festivals, beach parties, and cultural events, adding to the lively atmosphere.
Getting to Carvoeiro is easy, with the town located about 60 kilometers west of Faro and accessible by car, bus, or taxi. The nearest train station is in Estômbar, a short taxi ride away. Accommodation options range from boutique hotels and family-run guesthouses to luxury resorts and self-catering apartments, many with sea views and easy access to the beach.
The best time to visit Carvoeiro is between May and September, when the weather is warm, the sea is inviting, and all attractions are open. June and September are especially pleasant, with fewer crowds and comfortable temperatures. Spring and autumn offer mild weather and quieter beaches, while winter is peaceful and ideal for exploring the coast without the summer bustle. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a taste of Algarve life, Carvoeiro promises a memorable and sun-soaked escape.
