Poça Dona Beija (Furnas Hot Spring Pool)
Iron-rich thermal pools at 39°C in lush Furnas valley
Poça Dona Beija, located in the village of Furnas on São Miguel Island, is one of the Azores’ most popular thermal bathing spots. Nestled in a lush valley, this hot spring complex features four pools of varying size and depth, each filled with iron-rich geothermal water that maintains a soothing temperature of around 39°C (102°F). The pools are surrounded by dense vegetation, creating a tranquil, almost tropical atmosphere that feels especially magical at night when the area is softly illuminated.
The site is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and visitors are allowed to stay for up to 1½ hours per session. Last entry is at 10:15 p.m., with guests asked to leave by 10:45 p.m. Night visits are a highlight, offering a peaceful, steamy soak under the stars, though reservations are recommended during busy periods. Admission is €8 for adults and €6 for children under six. Facilities include parking, changing areas, and a small souvenir shop.
Because the mineral-rich water can tint swimwear, it’s advisable to bring an older swimsuit. Poça Dona Beija does not require advance booking for daytime visits, but planning ahead is wise during peak season. While the site itself does not have a detailed historical background, it stands out for its serene setting and the restorative experience it offers, making it a memorable stop for anyone exploring São Miguel’s geothermal wonders.
