Monte Toboggans
Traditional wicker sledges descending Monte to Funchal
Monte Toboggans, known locally as the Carreiros do Monte, offer a uniquely Madeiran way to travel from the hilltop district of Monte down to the streets of Funchal. The ride uses traditional wicker sledges that a pair of strong men—called carreiros—pull along a steep, winding track. Originating in the 19th century as a quick transport method for residents, the practice has been continuous for more than a hundred years and today serves as one of the island’s most iconic experiences.
The attraction operates Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 18:00, although the service can close early if queues grow long or weather turns unfavourable. Tickets are sold on‑site for the same day; there is no online reservation system. Prices are €27.50 for a single rider, €35.00 for two, and €52.50 for three. As you settle into the wooden seat, the carreiros grip the ropes and the sledge darts down the paved slope, offering a thrilling sense of speed while you glimpse the terraced gardens, historic houses, and ocean views that line the route.
The ride lasts only a few minutes, but it provides a vivid glimpse of Madeira’s cultural heritage—combining historic transport, local craftsmanship, and the lively interaction between visitors and the friendly carreiros who keep the tradition alive.
