Graciosa Island (Azores)
Ethnographic museum in historic wine warehouse
Graciosa, the “White Island” of the Azores, lies just east of São Miguel and offers a quiet, rural charm that feels far removed from typical tourist routes. The island’s single municipality, Santa Cruz da Graciosa, houses about 4 000 residents who keep traditional ways alive in a landscape marked by rolling pastures, volcanic cones and a coastline dotted with small ports.
The centerpiece of cultural visits is the Graciosa Museum, located at Largo Conde de Simas 17 in the historic centre of Santa Cruz. Housed in a former cereal‑and‑wine warehouse, the museum lets you step inside a reconstructed island house, complete with original furnishings, and explore a genuine wine cellar with its press rooms. Agricultural tools, pottery, and examples of cooperage and cabinet‑making illustrate the island’s self‑sufficient past, while the garden displays a cannon that once defended local fortifications.
Beyond the main exhibition, the museum complex includes two satellite centres. The Whale‑hunting Centre, set in an ancient canoe‑hut, tells the story of the island’s maritime hunting heritage, and the Mill Centre in Fontes showcases a traditional stone mill still capable of grinding grain. Visitors can ask staff (phone +351 295 712 429, email museu.graciosa.info@azores.gov.pt) for details on opening times and any modest entry fees. A stroll through these spaces offers a hands‑on glimpse of Graciosa’s everyday history, making the island feel like a living museum of Azorean life.
