Castelo De São Jorge
Medieval citadel with panoramic Lisbon views
Castelo de São Jorge, perched atop Lisbon’s highest hill in the Santa Maria Maior district, is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. This medieval citadel offers sweeping views over Lisbon and the Tagus River, making it a favorite destination for both history enthusiasts and photographers. The site’s history stretches back to at least the 6th century BC, with fortifications built and rebuilt by Phoenicians, Romans, Visigoths, Moors, and, finally, the Portuguese after the 1147 Siege of Lisbon.
The castle’s current Gothic-style structure features a quadrangular layout, ten square turrets, a distinctive elbow-shaped gateway, and a fortified barbican. Visitors can wander along reconstructed ramparts, climb watchtowers, and explore peaceful courtyards and gardens—many restored during a major 20th-century renovation. The Ulysses Tower is a highlight, offering a unique “Câmara Escura” periscope experience with panoramic city views.
Castelo de São Jorge has served as a royal palace, military barracks, and even the national archive, reflecting its central role in Lisbon’s history. Today, it stands as a national monument and museum, inviting exploration of its ancient walls and archaeological remains. The castle’s elevated position provides some of the best vistas in Lisbon, and its layered history offers insight into the city’s multicultural past. A visit here is both a journey through time and a chance to see Lisbon from a truly spectacular vantage point.
